Happy birthday to me... happy birthday to mee.... happy birthday to mee.... mee... happy birthday to meeee....
Weird, right? That’s how some people celebrate their birthdays, alone, no one to share with... no one to wish them. There are billions of people in this world but many individuals are alienated and feel all alone. Sometimes it is driven by the desire for privacy. Sometimes it is because they really don’t have so many friends that they feel that their life is full. But it need not be so.....
Yesterday was my birthday. I see myself as a private person, But still, over the years, I seem to have built a large base of friends, relatives, colleagues, neighbours, clients, vendors, acquaintances, FB friends, etc. I was literally flooded with messages on FB, FB Messenger, Linkedin, Google messenger, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS and calls with some people using 2 or 3 mediums to reach out.
I remember my birthdays in the 20s when I was living away from home that there would hardly be anyone at all who even remembers it is my birthday let alone wishing me for it. It would pass just like any other day of the year, quietly and without much fanfare.
But yesterday was very different and I’m grateful for my circle of friends and loved ones who remember, or who are forced to remember (thanks to technology), and take the trouble of wishing me on this special day so it can become extra special.
I’m grateful for birthdays because at least once a year all my friends speak to me or message me even if they are thousands of miles away. Birthdays make us take stock on who we are, where we are, what we are up to and what we can do more in our life. I’m grateful for birthdays because it reminds us that we are not alone and we are part of a tribe that is bound by love.
Thank you, dear friends, for making yesterday extra special. Love you tons.
